Cheltenham Festival Day 4 Tips

We’ve reached the final afternoon of the Cheltenham Festival and what a week it’s been. Gold Cup Day always carries a different sort of energy. The pressure is on, the crowds are buzzing and everyone is trying to land one last big winner before the curtain falls.

The Cheltenham Gold Cup is obviously the headline act, but the entire card is packed with quality from the Triumph Hurdle to the Albert Bartlett. It’s often a day where strong opinions pay off and hopefully we can finish the Festival with a couple more winners.

Here are our Day 4 selections for Gold Cup Day at Cheltenham.

PROACTIF looks to have the ideal profile for a race like the Triumph Hurdle where improvement from juveniles is often the key factor. He has shown plenty of ability already but still gives the impression there is more to come, which can be dangerous in a race full of lightly raced four-year-olds. The way he travels through his races is particularly encouraging and that strong cruising speed should stand him in good stead in what is usually run at a relentless gallop. If he continues to jump with the fluency he has shown so far, he could easily find himself in a perfect position turning for home.

At a bigger price APOLON DE CHARNIE looks interesting as the one who could outrun his odds. Juvenile hurdles often throw up surprises and this is the type of horse who could improve again for the step up in class and the strong tempo likely in a race like this. If he settles well early and finds a good rhythm over his hurdles, he could easily stay on strongly up the famous Cheltenham hill and make his presence felt at a generous price.

The County Hurdle is always one of the most competitive handicaps of the Cheltenham Festival and it often pays to side with horses who still look ahead of their mark. MURCIA fits that bill nicely. She has improved steadily this season and the way she travels through her races suggests a strong gallop around Cheltenham will suit her well. If she gets into a good rhythm early, she could easily be moving into contention turning for home.

At bigger prices both SINNATRA and Absurde are respected as dangers. The latter has already shown he can handle the Festival atmosphere, while the former looks the type who could improve again in a race like this. In a contest where luck in running can play a big part, siding with a couple at the prices makes plenty of sense.

DINOBLUE looks the one to beat here and she arrives with a very solid profile for a race like this. She has been competing in strong company all season and the drop back into this division could prove ideal. Her jumping is usually very slick and she travels strongly through her races, which are two key traits around Cheltenham where maintaining rhythm can be crucial.

That said, Panic Attack certainly commands respect and the market support for her hasn’t gone unnoticed. She has been progressing nicely and if that money continues to come it could be significant. Still, if the selection produces the level of form she has shown against top opposition earlier in the season, she should take plenty of beating.

The Albert Bartlett is always a proper test of stamina and it often rewards the toughest horses rather than the flashiest. DOCTOR STEINBERG looks to have the ideal profile for this race. He has already shown he stays strongly and the way he finishes his races suggests this sort of gruelling test will suit him well. If he settles into a good rhythm early and keeps jumping accurately, he could be the one still finding plenty when others begin to struggle up the Cheltenham hill.

At bigger prices both KAZANSKY and JALON D’OUDAIRIES are interesting alternatives. The former looks a strong stayer who should relish the trip, while the latter has been well regarded by Gordon Elliott for some time and shaped nicely when winning at Naas last time. In a race that often produces surprises, both look capable of outrunning their odds if things fall into place.

The Gold Cup is always the ultimate test for a staying chaser and this year’s renewal looks another fascinating contest. GAELIC WARRIOR makes plenty of appeal as the one who could land the big one. He has developed into a top-class chaser and the way he travels through his races is a huge asset. His jumping has continued to improve with experience and if he finds a good rhythm early, he could be very hard to peg back once they turn for home.

The obvious danger could be INOTHEWAYURTHINKIN, who has already shown he has the stamina and toughness required for a race like this winning it 12 months ago. He looks the type who will keep finding when the race really begins to develop up the hill and if the favourite falters at any stage, he could easily be the one ready to capitalise. The Jukebox Man is another one who could go well as he is a strong stayer who should relish this stiff finish at Cheltenham and could keep finding.

The Hunters’ Chase often rewards horses with plenty of stamina and experience, and WONDERWALL looks to have the right profile for a race like this. He has been running consistently well and the way he keeps finding at the end of his races suggests this sort of stiff test around Cheltenham could suit him perfectly. If he settles into a good rhythm early and jumps cleanly throughout, he could be very dangerous turning for home.

One who could give him plenty to think about is STATTLER, who brings a touch of class to the race. He has proven himself in strong staying contests in the past and if he adapts well to this discipline, his stamina could make him a serious threat. Still, if the selection produces the level he is capable of, he looks a solid play in what should be another competitive contest.

The closing race on Gold Cup Day is always a competitive handicap and it can pay to side with a horse who still looks ahead of the handicapper. KEL HISTOIRE makes plenty of appeal on that front. He has been improving steadily and the way he travels through his races suggests a strongly-run contest like this could suit him well. If he gets into a good rhythm early and the race unfolds at a solid gallop, he could be arriving on the scene late when it matters most.

At bigger prices both WENDROCK and ANDASHAN look capable of outrunning their odds. The former has shown enough ability to suggest he could be competitive in a race like this, while the latter is the type who could improve again in a big-field handicap. In a race that often throws up a surprise or two, both look worth considering alongside the main selection.
